Do This for Continuous Blooms on your Potted Flowers

Continuous Blooms on Your Potted Flowers

Summer always comes to our desert homes, and with it, the intense heat we’ve come to expect. While the temperatures can be tiring, I’ve found small ways to escape and ensure continuous blooms in my garden when we don’t leave for extensive holidays. We can take a brief four-hour round trip to Mt. Lemmon for lunch, and it feels like a refreshing two-day retreat.

Sometimes, I choose not to play a morning round of golf since the heat and humidity can set in early.
Embracing these little adventures and my right to choose are my ways of making the most of summer—one of the perks of adulthood! 🤩

Want your flowers to be bright and beautiful? Do this every week or two

This week, let’s focus on a simple yet impactful task that will keep your garden looking vibrant even in the intense summer heat.

Deadhead Your Spent Flowers to ensure continuous blooms

By deadheading your spent flowers every week, you encourage your plants to produce new buds, resulting in continuous blooms. This regular maintenance makes the task less overwhelming and keeps your garden looking fresh and colorful.

To deadhead correctly, look at the flower stem. Most flowering plants have a stem the flower is growing from. Picture a geranium or pansy. If you were to snip the flower off at the top of the stem, you would end up with many empty stalks coming out of the plant. Instead, cut the entire stem back into the center of the plant.

Not only will this encourage the plant to produce more flowers, it will create a fuller, healthier plant.

100 Times

We all know deadheading can be time consuming. Can you do this 100 times without fail? Over the course of a year, you will find yourself deadheading your plants at least 100 times. If you doubt you can do this for a multitude of flowers, reduce how many plants you have that require deadheading.

I learned this tip from a business newsletter I subscribe to. The question was, when you have a new idea, can you do it 100 times? For example, can you write 100 blogs, or post on Facebook, one hundred days in a row? I think this is a valuable test for anything we take on.

Not up for so much deadheading?

Here’s one of my articles that gives you what I call, “easy-care” designs for your pots. I.e. ones that require less deadheading. It includes both a summer and winter design. Easy-Care Arrangements for Desert Pots
